Known for its versatility, safety and luxury, Volvo has continuously marvels the automotive industry with their top of the line vehicles that serve as standards to other competitions. This is true with the V90. The Volvo S90 is the rebadged 960 sedan which was first released in August 12, 1991 as Volvo\'s entry for the high-end luxury class.

As a 940, the model was equipped with everything, a luxury car driver look for and riding the same platform with the discontinued 760. The 960 was offered in three trims, GLE that was powered by a 153-horsepower, dual-cam 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine; Turbo, and SE were powered by the same 162-horsepower turbocharged 2.3-liter with a single-overhead camshaft. All trim engines were coupled with the standard 4-speed overdrive automatic transmission. Other standard features were antilock brakes, a driver's airbag, and Volvo's new automatic-locking differential.

The 960 sedans and wagons came in 1992 to complete the 900-series. They were equipped with the new 2.9-liter twin-cam inline-6, rated at 201 horsepower. In 1994, the 960 engines were replaced with 162-horsepower turbocharged version of the previews engine. A year later, the 2.9-liter inline-6 was designed to reduce emissions that resulted to a reduced power from 201 hp down to 181 hp.

In 1997, the whole line of Volvo vehicles was renamed. The company uses a system of letters denoting body style followed by the series numbers, thus making the Volvo 960 to S90. Also that same year, the S90 was virtually unchanged.

The 1998 became the last year of the V90. It came with power seats, windows and door locks, leather seating surfaces, simulated wood dash panels, power sunroof and a premium AM/FM stereo with cassette and lots of safety features.
