One of the most successful models of Volvo is the 700 Series. This was initially conceptualized as a replacement for the well-respected Volvo 200 Series but sales of the latter showed it must stay in the industry and the Volvo 760, the first of 700 series, should go and start a new line of Volvo vehicles. The Volvo 700 Series stood on a higher rung than the earlier Volvo series. In terms of styling, performance and safety, it was better than other cars of its class. In fact it is known as one of the fastest diesel powered cars in the world, with its great line of turbo engines.
There were many Volvo 700 series vehicles produced during its production from 1982 until 1991. Topping the list is the Volvo 780, a two-door coupe based on the 700 floor pan. It is the most attractive and the most uniquely designed model of the 700 Series. Although an upscale version of the Volvo 740 and Volvo 760, the Volvo 780 had a different body panel and it was offered in left hand drive form. It was powered by a turbo diesel engine that delivered 129 horsepower. This engine was also fitted to the Italian version of the Volvo 760. In 1990, two engines were offered as options for the Volvo 780 models marketed in America, the 2.8L V6 and the 2.3L turbocharged and intercooled engines that generated 145 horsepower and 188 horsepower, respectively.
Underneath the body is a dependable independent rear suspension that gave the Volvo 780 a quality ride and secure handling. It carried a 21 gallon fuel tank and the engine was mated only with a 4-spped automatic shift. Inside the Volvo 780 is just as impressive as this car’s performance. It comes fully equipped with advance features like motorized front seats with memory function. These seats can also automatically move forward and backward, making it easier to get into the rear seats.
