Many cars claim to be the best in terms of performance, style and luxurious features but only a few claim as the safest. The Volvo 200 series are among those considered the safest cars in the world, needless for Volvo to claim for such honor. Every model upgrade of the Volvo 200 series includes enhancement of its safety parts from the crumple zones in the body panels to the interior parts.
In essence, the 200 series, a line of mid-sized cars made between 1974 and 1993, is a facelift of the former Volvo 140 series. The new 200 series was offered in two model lineups: the Volvo 240 series and the Volvo 260 series. The 240 series came with six different models powered by a 4-cylinder engine while the Volvo 260 series came with two models powered by a 6-cylinder engine. Like the earlier Volvo series, both series were offered in two- and four-door sedan and station wagon body styles.
The Volvo 260 series and the 240 series flaunted new front end, inspired by the VESC (Volvo Experimental Safety Car), a prototype experiment in car safety. The Volvo 260 series had large crumple zones on the front and rear part of the vehicle, giving its occupants excellent crash protection. It also had a new McPherson front struts that afforded more room for the engine bay and excellent rack and pinion steering that gave it a soft and relaxing drive. The interior was pleasantly designed as well, highlighted by the newly designed dashboard.
Volvo 260 series cars were equipped with a V6 B27E engine, also called the PRV engine. This was the first engine designed by Volvo together with Renault and Peugeot. It had a capacity of 2664cc and generated 140 horsepower. Its block was an aluminum alloy fitted with wet cylinder liners. It was mated with either a manual or automatic transmission. The top of the line Volvo 260 series car, the Volvo 264GL, came with electric windows, standard power steering and an optional leather or plush upholstery.
