The word "tercel" has a variety of meanings, but often it would refer to something small. In Latin, the word tercel means one-third. If used to name a bird, it would refer to a male hawk or falcon whose size is about a third of their female counterparts. When used for a Toyota vehicle, the Tercel would refer to a long reigning entry-level subcompact vehicle model, the smallest subcompact vehicle that the company has produced.
The Toyota Tercel is a front-wheel drive subcompact car manufactured and sold by Toyota for about 20 years since 1979. It debuted as the Toyota Corolla Tercel, the first ever front-wheel drive car manufactured by the company and also the smallest subcompact vehicle in Toyota's history. Before the Toyota dropped the Tercel in its vehicle line-up in 1999, there was already five generations of the car produced.
The first generation Tercel was sold from the 1980 to the 1982 model years, then called the Toyota Corolla Tercel. The vehicle was equipped with a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine unit and was available in 2-door coupe and 3-door hatchback body styles. A redesign in 1983 ushered the second generation of the car, and was then called simply as the Toyota Tercel. For its second generation, the Tercel was available in 3- and 5-door hatchback and 5-door station wagon body styles. The station wagon version also came equipped with a 4-wheel drive system and a 6-speed manual transmission unit.
In 1987, a larger and more luxurious Tercel was introduced, marking the brand's third generation. The body styles of the previous generations were retained, but interior amenities increased and the vehicle were equipped with newly designed Toyota Tercel parts. By 1990, the safety features of the car were enhanced, but the station wagon along with its 4-wheel drive system was dropped. By 1991, a fourth generation of the car was introduced, but only in 2-door coupe and 3-door hatchback body styles.
From 1995 until 1999 appeared the fifth and last generation of the car. Although obviously better than the previous generations, the model have to be dropped in 1999 to give way to the new and future products of Toyota. In 1999, the Toyota Tercel was replaced by the Toyota Echo.
For twenty years, the Toyota Tercel was loved by many because of its simplicity, reliability and fuel efficiency. Today, the car continues to rank high in the most preferred used car. Its performance today is a proof that the Toyota Tercel is equipped not only with high quality and high performance Toyota Tercel parts, but also parts that are designed to last.
