The Toyota MR2 or Midship Runabout, 2-seater is currently a 21-year old two-seat, mid-engine, rear wheel drive sports car manufactured by the Toyota Motor Corporation. And since this company is known for longevity and reliability of automobile products, the MR2 is definitely a good catch! Though started to be produced by 1984, the Toyota MR2 was conceptualized in 1976 when Toyota commenced a design project to come up with a car that is pleasurable to drive yet offers a decent fuel economy. MR2’s existence was divided into 4 generations.
The first generation includes those which are produced from 1979 up to 1983. The first one to be produced is a automobile outfitted with a transversely placed engine in the middle of the car called SA-X. Coming from its base design, the SA-X was slowly transformed into being a real sports car. By 1983, another car concept was formulated, thus the SV-3 came to life. The SV-3 called as the Mid-engined, Rear-wheel Drive, 2-seater was the first Japanese manufactured mid-engined car to be produced in bunch.
The second generation includes those from 1984 up to 1989 such as the AW11 which is a small, light, economical and practical car. It features a light bodyshell, superior handling and relatively powerful small displacement engine thus making it fun to drive and mimicking highly expensive supercars and still being both easy to control and quick in movements. After which came the third generation MR2s which were produced during 1990 until 1998. The standard bearer for this is the SW20 which is longer, wider, and heavier with smooth bodylines. Because of its power and size, it was classed as a GT-car.
The fourth generation MR2s includes those cars produced in 1999 to present such as the ZZW30. The said car was in a way a reincarnation of the SW20 only smaller and that the solid or targa top was replaced with a convertible soft top. Though facing a discontinuation in terms of production, the MR2 is considered to be one of Toyota’s successful cars ever made.
