Swift speaks of performance that takes place with quickness and efficiency in a refined attitude. Suzuki made use of that term to name one of its creations. Upon its introduction in 1985, the vehicle was known as the Suzuki SA-310. After a year adopted a more appealing name, and turned to be the Suzuki Swift. The name essentially pertains to a trait that Suzuki has tried to bring out of the unit. In fact, Swift got several names for its versions in other lands that also resembled with its meaning. It was known to be the Chevrolet Sprint and Geo Metro in America and Canada, Chevrolet Swift in South America, Maruti Esteem in India, Suzuki Cultus in Japan, and Pontiac Firefly also in Canada.
Initially, Suzuki Swift came in two versions, the base GA and the upscale GL. It was then being powered by a 50 horsepower generating 993 cc straight-3 engine. One would feel odd about calling it Swift, when in fact the power doesn’t really complement the name. Even the later version GTi didn’t have enough power to prove its worth of the name with only 100 horses produced.
Suzuki launched the Swift in series concept. Upon its introduction until 1988 was the MK1 series. Powerhouses in this series included a carbureted and fuel injected 1.0-liter G10, fuel injected 1.3-liter G13, and 1.3-liter inline 4-cylinder 16-valve DOHC. The MK2 which was the second series Suzuki Swift was a redesigned version of its predecessor. This time, Swift presented improved body styling as well engineering, plus additional devices. The powertrain of the GTi got stronger web casting on the engine block, improved intake manifold, electronic control and hollow camshafts. And the rest of the Swift models practically had better more sophisticated systems than that of the MK1. In the third series, Swift has just changed some aesthetic components, basically leaving the prime equipments. The present Suzuki Swift has already stepped within the MK4, the fourth series. And it’s made to stand against the European B segment such as the Peugeot 206, Opel Corsa, and Fiat Punto.
