As with any mechanism, an automotive engine would not start to function without one component that stimulates the ignition process: the starter. With the use of this electric motor component, it will turn over the engine. When it's already activated, the starter cranks the engine.

Because the starter motor is expected to crank the engine, it requires large amount of current. This is the reason why it is attached to the battery through large cables. The starter is consisted of starter solenoid and a very powerful DC electric motor. The solenoid acts as the electric switch, in which when activated the starter motor will be connected to the battery upon closing the circuit.

The starter of your vehicle can be operated only when the automatic transmission shifter is positioned either park or neutral mode. Otherwise, the neutral safety switch will be left open. The starter relay will then disconnect the starter control circuit. In the case of manual transmission, its clutch pedal should be depressed.

Often times, driver would complain the problem when their vehicle would not start immediately. This problem could be linked with its starting system. Or it may not. The problem could be attributed to a defective battery.

You will know when the problem is directly connected with your vehicle's starting system when you turn the ignition key to its "start" position but nothing happens. This is probably because one of the components of the system is malfunctioning. Usually all you could hear is a clicking sound and the cranking of the starter is very slow.

In either case, you should have your vehicle checked by a mechanic. If the problem lies in the starter motor itself, it might need a replacement. But not to worry as replacement starters could be found easily in the market.
