Suzuki Samurai
When we talk of conventional off-road vehicles, we would often hear the brands Jeep, Hummer and Land Rover. More recently, however, the brand Suzuki has also started appearing on the off-road track. The Suzuki Samurai, in particular, have been seen more and more in off-road situations, serving as capable alternatives to the costlier top SUV brands. It is surprising, though, that the practicality of the Suzuki Samurai for off-road tracking has only been valued of late when the vehicle has been dropped from Suzuki's vehicle line-up for almost a decade now.
The Suzuki Samurai was a compact sport/utility vehicle (SUV) introduced by Suzuki in 1986. Actual sales of the vehicle across the U.S., however, began only in 1989 and the vehicles were initially available in 2-door hardtop and soft top body styles. The hardtop version of the SUV sold poorly, forcing the company to drop it after 1989. By 1991, only soft top versions of the vehicle were sold, available in JS (2WD), JA (2WD), and JL (4WD) trim levels. For the final season of the SUV, however, only the 4WD version was sold.
A lot of bad things have already been said about the Suzuki Samurai, including a controversial remark made by Consumer Reports. Critics, in general, have touted the Suzuki Samurai as a vehicle insufficient for real transportation. This was largely because of the vehicle's 66 hp 1.3-liter engine that proved underpowered even if matched with the 5-speed manual transmission. The SUV was also criticized a lot because of its small size and crude design.
With all these criticisms, one may wonder why the Suzuki Samurai have recently become the most potent alternative SUV on the off-road track. The reasons: the vehicle's size and price. The vehicle is a lot cheaper compared to the leading conventional SUVs and its small size made it a decent fuel consumer. Also, a lot of replacement and performance Suzuki Samurai parts are still available in the market, and since off-road parts may have to be replaced often, this comes to the advantage of the Suzuki Samurai.
