From conventional to modern—this is how the compact SUVs of Suzuki have changed through the years. It all started with the Suzuki Sidekick, a conventional SUV that was a very capable off-road tracker. Then came the Suzuki Vitara and Grand Vitara pair, both providing the same off-road capability showcased by the Sidekick while sporting a more contemporary exterior and a more comfortable interior. Then, just recently, a new generation Suzuki Grand Vitara was introduced that abandoned all the conventionality of Suzuki's first SUV and shifted more on the contemporary crossover SUV design.
The Suzuki Vitara and Grand Vitara were introduced by Suzuki in 1999, replacing the conventional Suzuki Sidekick which was dropped a model year earlier. Actually, both SUVs share the same body and chassis, although the Grand Vitara was a bit larger, thus provided more interior space. Equipped with a 2.5-liter 155 hp V6 engine, the Grand Vitara also proved itself more powerful and more refined than the regular model. All these differences would later prove to be beneficial to the Grand Vitara, as the large model have outsold the regular models on all the years that both were sold. The Grand Vitara has even outlasted the regular Vitara, as the latter was dropped after the 2004 model year.
The semi-conventional and semi-contemporary Grand Vitara lasted until 2005; one year after the regular Vitara was dropped. It would be replaced by the newly redesigned Grand Vitara for the 2006 model year. All conventionality lost, the new Suzuki Grand Vitara is a contemporary crossover SUV, with the design focused more on passenger comforts than on off-road performance. This design shift is definitely welcome for those who have long waited for a Suzuki Grand Vitara that feels good on the road, but a sad fact for those who have learned to love the off-road capability of the old Grand Vitara.
The Grand Vitara has indeed changed from the semi-rugged off-road vehicle it was when introduced to the car-like contemporary SUV it is now. One thing, though, have never changed for the SUV, and that is the quality of its parts.
