The automobile industry is teaming with big and small brands of passenger cars, vans, trucks, buses and other kinds of vehicles. Through the years, various car makes have emerged successful yet only some have lasted for decades. Many have gained popularity as well while some remained on the sidelines; however not all of them on the sidelines can be considered as losers in the market.

Cars from Subaru are among those who belong to the minority in terms of popularity. Compared to other car makes, they have not gained wide recognition and much praises but Subaru has also gained fair share of the auto industry’s total sales. In fact, Subaru comapny has gained more than enough profit to keep it sailing through the high and low tides of the auto industry.

Subaru is a subsidiary of the Fuji Heavy Industries, a Japanese company. It got is name from the cluster of stars called Pleiades, a part of the Taurus constellation. The six stars represent the six companies that compose the parent company, FHI. Subaru also mean “unite” in Japanese, which is very ideal for the Fuji group. The name Subaru was initially intended for the company‘s first car model, the P-1. This vehicle later became the Subaru 1500 model. However, it was not officially Subaru’s first car but only the first car to carry the name Subaru.

The first vehicle marketed by Subaru was the Subaru 360. It was a small and light-weight passenger car. It was a rear wheel drive with 2-stroke 25-hp 356 cc engine. It was offered in two-door sedan, five-door minivan, truck and mini racer versions. From 1968, Subaru began to import cars to the US. The Subaru 360 wasn’t exactly the best seller import but Subaru was able to sell about 6,000 of this vehicle in America.
