After many years of selling exclusively compact cars and coupe, Saturn’s loyal follower feel the need for something new. And now, Saturn gave it, they surprised everyone with the introduction of their midsize sedan and wagon. These new Saturns are larger and have more creature comfort, and that’s exactly what the consumers crave for.
The new LS are offered in three versions of the sedans and two wagons. The sedan versions are named LS, LS1 and LS2 while the wagons are called LW1 and LW2. The LS means large sedan and they come with definite similarity to their smaller siblings. The LS sedan also shares many excellent features with their subcompact siblings but they are now housed in their new dent and ding-resistant side-body panels attached to a skeleton-like steel frame.
The LS marks Saturn’s entry in the midsize sedan division for 2000 model year. It is a front-wheel drive sedan that’s based on one of GM’s European models, the German Opel Vectra. This new Saturn midsize car is built in Wilmington, Del., plant of General Motors. But we must be aware that Saturn is a separate company that aims to attract buyers who want to purchase import-brand cars.
The LS is powered by a new, 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine generating 137 horsepower. This drivetrain is developed by Saturn and is not used in other GM models. The LS is not only bigger and spacious but also runs quieter and smoother than the Saturn S-Series. When you happen to drive Saturn LS, you’ll notice that it is very European in feeling as well as in suspension calibration. Another thing that’s amazing about the LS is that though it has retained its German heritage, it is better suited for North American pavements and for American drivers.
Inside, the center pod design of the LS will easily tell you that it is a Saturn. It has plenty of rear-seat legroom and it features standard driver and front passenger airbags. The LS also come with energy-absorbing interior door panels that help in reducing the impact force.
