Most vehicles today especially SUVs and pickup
trucks are used by owners in any conceivable task. Yes, even in serious
off-roading. This could be one of the reasons why all vehicles are
equipped with crossmember. Without a cross member, vehicles will surely
find it hard to pass through rough or uneven terrains. The cross member
is a piece of sheetmetal which is formed into a convoluted channel
shape. On some cars, the cross member is considered as a part of the
body shell while on other cars, it can be removed.
Usually, the cross member is installed onto the bottom of the chassis
and is aimed to secure the transmission in the place where the drive
shaft begins. But far more than that, the principal job that cross
member has to perform in the automobile is to give greater ground
clearance. In a vehicle, ground clearance is the distance between the
ground and lowest-hanging point under the vehicle. Greater ground
clearance makes it easier for vehicle to run off-road without damaging
its underbody parts and components. It also helps the vehicle achieve
smooth and controlled driving particularly in traversing through heavy
snow and worse terrains.
Crossmembers for different vehicle makes are readily available in the
market, but it can also be customized. The wide range of crossmembers
in the industry includes Saturn crossmember. They usually come in
various designs and specifications; you just have to choose the one
that fits right with your Saturn model. You can also paint your Saturn
crossmember if you want them to jive with the vehicle’s body paint.
In installing a new Saturn crossmember, whether customized or
aftermarket part, there are some things that you should keep in mind.
It is important to remove first the car’s front drive line. Be careful
not loose nor misplace the stock bolts used to lock the old
crossmember. It is because new crossmembers didn’t come with any bolt
on. And one thing more, installation of Saturn crossember is really
easy and it doesn’t necessitate any special tool.
