Saturn Corporation started in 1985 as a response to the increasing popularity
of traditional vehicles. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Motors, the new
company concentrated in the small and compact car classification. Its name was
adopted from the Saturn rocket that carried Americans to the moon during the space
race with the USSR but with a new mission, that is to beat Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi
and other Japanese brands in the small-car race which has significantly increased
its popularity over the period.
In 1987, the first Saturn-intent vehicle was built with all thermoplastic panels
except for the hood and the steel roof and in 1990 Saturn was officially on the
market. Three years later, the company placed itself in the chart by selling its
100,000th units. It took only five months to reach a doubled sales output for
the Saturn. On February of 1993, the 300,000th unit was sold which followed by
its 400,000th unit in May of the same year. By 1997, Saturn has produced 1.5 million
units.
Aside from compact cars, Saturn is currently producing midsize, SUV, minivan,
and sports vehicles: the S-series, ION, L-series, Aura, VUE, Relay, and Sky. These
models are made from dependable engines and quality materials to produce a total
quality car. The exterior is made from sheet metal that guarantees an excellent
body. From the hood, trunklid, fenders, doors, roof and quarter panels, these
separate body panels are welded or bolted together that create a whole Saturn
quality body panel whch contributes to the success of the Saturn.
