Pontiac Tempest
Every General Motors marque specializes on a particular kind of vehicle and targets a specific segment of the auto market. In this way, GM autos do not compete with each other. Pontiac, made since 1926, is a line of cars that stands in between luxury and entry-level cars. Pontiac cars are not as base as entry-level cars but they are not luxurious so to speak. However, they come generously equipped with essential parts that are sure to make your ride comfortable, safe and satisfactory.
GM specially developed Pontiac for those who seek affordable alternative to expensive performance-oriented cars; thus, Pontiac cars have been known for their agility, sporty and youthful character. Through the years, Pontiac has produced numerous performance vehicles that competed with top sports car brands. Among them was the Pontiac GTO, the first muscle car that went into production in the 60s and 70s. It was a mid-size car yet equipped with extra powerful engine that worked well to give it a fairly good impression in races. The GTO started as a performance option on the mid-size Tempest LeMans, which was part of the Pontiac Tempest model line.
The Tempest was an entry model line produced by Pontiac from 1961 through 1970. It was based on the GM A platform, which it shared with the Buick Special, Chevrolet Corvair and Oldsmobile F-85. It was introduced as a compact car that featured an innovative curved driveshaft and rear-mounted transaxle, a combination of differential and transmission. Although a compact, it was praised for its space and utility that of a Model-A Ford. It carried an aluminum Buick-built 215 in3 V8.
In 1963, the new proto-muscle car was introduced, the Tempest LeMans. It got a new Pontiac 5.3L (326in3) V8 engine that generated 264 horsepower. On the following year, the Tempest was again redesigned; however, it appeared still conventional since it was an entry model car. The transaxle was no longer offered and was replaced by a front-transmission design. What brought popularity to this line of vehicle is the Tempest LeMans GTO, which eventually became a distinct model series, the Pontiac GTO.
