Dealing with large Pontiac automobiles will lead you to one prominent name – Pontiac Grand Prix. Since 1962, the Pontiac Grand Prix is originally a standard Pontiac Catalina coupe – a full-sized automobile that has a hardtop body style but with less chrome outside and sportier trim that features bucket seats and a center console inside. For over 80 years, Pontiac as one of the standard bearer of the General Motors automobile maker lineup was able to come up with quality and made to perform vehicles and certainly, the Pontiac Grand Prix is not an exemption.
In 1969, the Grand Prix was dressed up for a new appearance patterned on a bit elongated version of the intermediate general Motors’ A-platform but finally had its own body. This smaller, lighter Grand Prix exhibits a new style and luxury among its class. Performance was also taken to a higher level by installing a better manual transmission and engine choices was raised up to the 390 horsepower or 290 kW, 428 HO. This 1969 Grand Prix created a new image to compete with other excellent quality cars.
In 1973, all vehicles based on A-platform were redesigned including the Grand Prix. With the addition of crash bumpers, the 1973 Grand Prix generation became larger and heavier, but due to stricter emissions control system, its performance had declined. Half a decade after, the Pontiac Grand Prix had some sheet metal revisions resulting to its downsizing. And on 1988, the first front wheel drive W-body Grand Prix Coupe was built with three trim designations to which re the base, LE and the SE. This generation Grand Prix was equipped with great features both as to the performance and convenience.
Final Grand Prix redesign was made in the year 1997. The major change made it bigger in size and racier in appearance. 1997 Grand Prix Coupes and sedans had the equal styling excluding the rear doors and quarter panels. And on 2004, the Grand Prix was updated on a revised version of the GM W-platform.
