If you'll take a look at an old Plymouth Reliant today, there's actually nothing in it that you can be proud of. The car is boxy and old, and by current standards, it is plainly ugly. The vehicle would also prove no match to any vehicle today in terms of performance. Because of this, one would easily wonder why Chrysler would look at the car with so much reverence and admiration. What good is there in the Plymouth Reliant that many of us today simply can’t appreciate?
The Plymouth Reliant was introduced by the Chrysler Corporation in 1981 and was sold until the 1989 model year. It was introduced and sold with the Dodge Aries, and together were the first K-cars that the company ever manufactured. They were called K-cars because they were based on the Chrysler K-body platform, a vehicle body platform that Chrysler would later use for most of their other vehicles manufactured in the 1980s.
Prior to the introduction of the Plymouth Reliant, the Chrysler Corporation was slowly sinking towards bankruptcy, with the sales of their various vehicles declining each year. For the Plymouth division, the Plymouth Volare wasn't able to match up the sales registered by the Plymouth Valiant that it replaced. It was only until the Plymouth Reliant was introduced when the sales of Plymouth vehicles started picking up.
So what's so special about the Plymouth Reliant that it was able to boost the sales of Chrysler and saved it from near bankruptcy? Well, nothing really. The Reliant was virtually a utilitarian and conventional American car that traded functionality over stylishness. It was basically an economy car that offered what the Japanese import vehicles of that time cannot give—an interior that can sit up to six persons. Its set of 2.2-liter I4 and 2.5-liter I6 engines may also provide poor vehicle performance by current standards, but during the 1980s, the performance was definitely enough and impressive for an economy car.
So the next time you take a look at your Plymouth Reliant, find in it the impressive qualities that many people in the past have found. It may not be the best car that you can drive in the road today, but it certainly is a good economy car even by current standards. And if equipped with high quality and high performance Plymouth Reliant parts, the car would certainly be able to achieve a performance comparable to most low-priced vehicle today.
