The Plymouth Cuda came as a result of Plymouth's focus on performance. Released in 1969, the Cuda was basically a cosmetic package created around the Formula S option for Plymouth Barracuda. Plymouth Cuda was offered with two engine choices – the 275 bhp 340 V8 or the 383. But in spite of this, the Cuda wasn't fast enough so Plymouth decided to stuff it with the triple carb 440 V8, which is famous for being the largest engine offered in a pony car. Prior to this, Plymouth enhanced the output of the 383 cid engine to 330 bhp so that power steering could be fitted but when the larger engine was introduced, the power steering was eliminated again and was made available only for models with automatic transmission.
The name Cuda also refer to the high performance alternative of the Plymouth Barracuda. When Plymouth finally discovered the right formula for performance, they put full force into it. The Barracuda was modified, sharing the same E-body platform with the Dodge Challenger. All its performance editions were named Cudas and are offered with five different V8 power trains – the 340 V8, 383 V8, 440 V8, 440+6 V8 and the powerful 426 Hemi. And to place all its power to the road, the 440 Plymouth Cudas and the Hemi were significantly outfitted with high performance suspension. The Plymouth Cudas also featured standard dual non-functional hood scoops.
On the same year (1970), Plymouth also released a special model – the Plymouth AAR Cuda. This model was derived from Dan Gurney's All-American Racers, which placed the Cudas in the racing series called Sports Car Club of America Trans-Am. The Plymouth AAR Cuda came with a unique 340 cid V8 with 3x2 carbs producing 290 bhp. It also boasted special shocks and recambered rear springs, lifting the rear end 1 3/4 inches above the regular Plymouth Cuda. This higher rear end allowed clearance for exhaust pipes and gave room for larger tires in the rear portion. And this made Plymouth Cuda one of the first models on the automobile production that used wider tires.
