Various Japanese autos have found their way into the American market
since the 1960s. They started as underpowered and small-sized cars but
over the years, they grew in likeability and performance, eventually
dominating American market for cars. Among them are cars from Nissan,
one of the biggest and most trusted Japanese automakers.
From 1932 until 1983, Nissan used the trademark Datsun and from 1984 up
until now, the Nissan badge has been used. Among the most enduring
models of Nissan is the Nissan Bluebird or the Datsun Bluebird. This
line of vehicle, launched in 1957, include compact and medium-sized
cars. Today, the Bluebird name is still being used by the Nissan
Bluebird Sylphy, which is based on the Nissan Pulsar. The first
generation of the Bluebird cars was called the Datsun/ Nissan 310,
which was based on the British Austin A40 sedan. At that time, Nissan
bought a production line license for the A40 and uses this on most of
their autos until 1963.
In the 60s, Nissan introduced more modern lines of cars, the Datsun
Sports or Fairlady, a series of inexpensive roadsters that competed
against European sports cars; and the Bluebird 410 sedan. The Datsun
Bluebird 410 or the Nissan 410 boasted new underhood mechanicals and
new and stylish look designed by the famous Italian design and concept
car constructor, Pininfarina. The later export version of the Bluebird,
the Nissan 510 combined the designs of the Nissan 410 and the Nissan
310. Perhaps this is the reason why the Datsun/ Nissan 510, known as
the “poor man’s BMW,” was thought to be designed by Pininfarina.
The Nissan 410 shared with the Fairlady roadster its chassis,
suspension and drivetrain. At the end of 1967, it was equipped with a
1.6L four engine with aluminum head, dual SU carburetors and a tubular
header. This is a great jump from the first Bluebird model, the 310 and
a great start for Nissan in their move for more modern line of cars.
The Nissan 410 cars, however, still used the old body-on-frame
technology.
