The Mitsubishi Diamante had all the characteristics to be called a good sedan. Loads of interior comfort and convenience features, a one of a kind style, good road manners—all these characteristics are definitely more than what one can find in an entry level or mid-level sedan, and all these can be found on the Mitsubishi Diamante. Sadly, the car was dropped after the 2004 model year. What went wrong? The Mitsubishi Diamante was competing in the luxury performance car division, and it probably wasn't just very competitive to last in the said category.

The Mitsubishi Diamante first appeared in the U.S. automotive scene in 1992, replacing the Mitsubishi Sigma as the company's flagship sedan. The first generation of the car was based on the Australian Mitsubishi Magna and was offered in two trim levels: in the ES trim with a 3.0-liter 175 hp V6 engine, and in the LS trim with a dual-cam version of the said engine rated at 202 hp. All first generation Mitsubishi Diamante were manufactured in Japan, although station wagon models that started appearing in 1993 were all produced in Australia.

In 1997, after being limited as rent cars for the previous year, the Mitsubishi Diamante was re-introduced for its second generation. The second generation Mitsubishi Diamante featured crispier styling, an improvement in performance, added interior space, and more interior amenities. Standing in the same wheelbase, the second generation Mitsubishi was longer by roughly 4 inches and gained more interior room, although the interior space was still smaller than what one would expect from a car of its size. The engine also grew larger and developed more power. For its last year, in 2004, base model Mitsubishi Diamantes were equipped with a 3.5-liter 205 hp V6 engines while the upscale VR-X models were equipped with a 210 hp version of the same engine.

As previously stated, Mitsubishi Diamantes had all the characteristics to be called a good sedan. Equipped with high quality Mitsubishi Diamante parts, the car would cruise smoothly on the road and provide a comfortable ride for all of its passengers. In the luxury performance car category, however, the Mitsubishi Diamante wasn't able to compete well. While much more affordable than its competitors, the Mitsubishi Diamante can't catch up with their rival's luxuriousness and sporty performance.
