Mitsubishi Cordia

Rarely can one find a vehicle that is both sporty and affordable, but in the 1980s, it was not. This is because a sporty car with a turbo version was introduced by Mitsubishi during the said period. This car was the Mitsubishi Cordia. By current standards, the Mitsubishi Cordia may no longer be considered as a high performance car, but it definitely was during its time. And so what if the car can no longer compete side by side with many sports cars today? You surely can't find any other vehicle as practical and as fun to drive as the Mitsubishi Cordia at the same price level.

The Mitsubishi Cordia was a 2-door hatchback introduced by Mitsubishi in the U.S. and in most other Mitsubishi markets in 1983 and sold up until the 1988 model year. The hatchback shared the same chassis and some body parts with the Mitsubishi Mirage (also known as the Mitsubishi Colt for Mitsubishi markets outside the U.S.). Two versions of the vehicle were available upon introduction until its demise: the base L trim level and the upscale Turbo version.

Feature-wise, the upscale Turbo version of the Mitsubishi Cordia has really nothing much to offer than what the base model already had. Performance-wise, however, the Turbo version of the car gives off more. The Mitsubishi Turbo was equipped with a 1.8-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that gives off 116 horsepower and 129 lb-ft of torque. This is definitely more than the 88 hp and 108 lb-ft that the base model can give, which was equipped with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine.

Apart from the engine, almost all Mitsubishi Cordia parts are shared between the L and Turbo trim levels. Both came standard with a 5-speed manual transmission, although a 3-speed automatic unit was also available for the L trim. There's not much amenities that one can enjoy inside the vehicle except for the standard cassette player. An air conditioning system and a sunroof was optional for both versions, though.
