The name Mitsubishi can be identified with different industries, this
is because there are a lot of companies that share this brand name.
Mitsubishi is actually a large group of autonomous Japanese companies
that have merged to use one brand name and trademark, the Mitsubishi.
The Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is only one of them and it is devoted
to manufacturing of automobiles. It is so far the fourth largest car
manufacturer in Japan.
Aside from the trademark, the companies also share a common legacy and
tradition of excellence which dates back from 1870. The first
Mitsubishi company was involved in shipping and later it ventured into
coal mining, shipbuilding, banking, insurance, warehousing and trade.
The diversity of the Mitsubishi products spanned from paper to steel,
electrical equipments, aircrafts and autos. Mitsubishi also took a role
in the world history as it manufactured the famous Zero aircraft that
was used in the attack on the Pearl Harbor during the World War II.
After the war, Mitsubishi separated into various independent companies
in 1946 but each utilized Mitsubishi’s accumulated technology and
technical strengths in building their own businesses. Independent
Mitsubishi companies cooperated in some ventures and likewise competed
with one another in some aspects.
The Mitsubishi Motors Corporation made cars and trucks that were
largely marketed in Europe, US and in the Far East region. But for many
years, Mitsubishi did not use its own name in selling their products;
instead, it cooperated with other car manufacturers. Many of
Mitsubishi’s early exported autos bore Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth
badge. It joined forces with the Chrysler company since the 1970s in
assembling vehicles for Chrysler; thus, many of Chrysler trucks have
used Mitsubishi parts. In the 80s, however, Mitsubishi began using
their own name in marketing their autos. In the late 80s, however, the
Eagle brand was used for some Mitsubishi products in the United States.
