The Cougar was sold under the Mercury brand of the Ford Motor Company's Lincoln-Mercury Division. First introduced in 1967, the Cougar gave Mercury its own pony car.
Like any other Mercury vehicle, the Mercury Cougar shared basic platforms with Fords series of automobiles. It was introduced as the more upscale version of the Ford Mustang. It had more mature when it comes to the design and its interior appointments are better than that of the Ford Mustang. Its chassis was stretched by three inches to provide a longer-ride-enhancing wheelbase.
This compact, front-drive sports coupe have one goal in mind: to enliven the Mercury's image. That is why the Cougar was important to Mercury Division's image for many years. During those years, the Mercury Cougar have received major enhancements to fully satisfy its patrons.
In 1967, the Mercury Cougar showed off its full-width divided grille with hidden headlamps and vertical bars that defined the front-end look. Aside from that, and aside from the base model, two trim packages were offered: the luxury XR-7 and sporting GT. This same year, the Cougar was Motor Trend magazine's Car of the Year.
The following year, the addition of federally mandated side marker lights was considered a major change. 1970S, the Cougar received its first major restyle, the front end now featured a center hood extension and electric shaver grill but it was in 1971 where the Cougar was restyled completely. This continuous innovation is the reason why the Mercury Cougar remained its mark on the American street scene.
