Named after the Roman God, Mercury, all Mercury vehicles in its early years were known as fast cars; to date, Mercury models are mostly based on Ford vehicle platforms. In 1945, Ford decided to combine Mercury with Lincoln to make the Lincoln-Mercury Division; the division was joined by the Edsel in 1958, making it the Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln Division. However, the Edsel was totally banished in 1960 and the division remained as Lincoln-Mercury ever since. This division had produced many automobile models for years, such includes the Bobcat under Mercury's marquee.

The Mercury Bobcat was introduced in the market in the year 1975. It was created similar to Ford's Pinto model; hence, the two were considered as twins. Mostly, the Mercury Bobcat was powered by either a 2.3 Liter Inline 4-cylinder engine rated at 88 horsepower or the 2.8 Liter V6 engine rated at 98 horsepower. Available transmissions are 3-speed automatic and 4-speed manual.
