Alternator is the main source of power of an automobile while it’s running. It produces electricity by converting the mechanical energy generated by the engine into alternating current. Mercury alternator is basically driven by a belt which is connected to the engine, tugged along as the engine starts to run. You might wonder why the engineers have to use alternators instead of direct current generators, if the alternating current would still have to be converted into direct. The process only becomes more complicated and long, right? Unlike direct current generators, alternators are able to produce steady stream of voltage continuously, and this is the kind of performance that more sophisticated creations need. One of the reasons is the growth of demand for units featuring air conditioning system. Direct current generators don’t have enough capacity to run them, thus, in time they were ran out by alternators. As a matter of fact even vintage owners upgrade their automobiles by converting DC generators into alternators.
