Started in the year 1920, the Mazda Motor Corporation is amazingly producing a large number of automobiles a year. Known for indisputable good reputation, Mazda came to produce around 800, 000 pieces of car and all of them are made with quality and performance for which only the Mazda Corporation can come up with. Among its vehicle model line up is the Mazda MPV which is a full sized minivan.
The Mazda MPV debuted by the year 1988 as a 1989 model. It had a strong appeal to Japanese car makers since it surpassed other vehicle brands of its class. With its totally different standing such as the American market minivan, and based on the best Mazda platform which is the 929’s HC, being outfitted with v6 engine and an optional all wheel drive. It also featured the traditional hinged doors as a substitute to the sliding doors.
The Mazda MPV has taken the press by storm by evolving as Car and Driver magazine’s one of the Ten Best List for two consecutive years, 1990 and 1991. It was also named to be among the “vehicles for the coming fuel crisis”. Though the Mazda MPV’s sale started strong, Mazda failed to sustain it and it was unable to compete with the new all wheel drive and V6-engine vehicles such as the Toyota Previa, Nissan Quest, and Honda Odyssey.
Because of the feared production ending, Mazda came up with new marketing strategy by equipping the MPV with I4 engine, which was later on replaced by the similar 2.5-liter engine unit. It was also sold as the All Sport in the United States and was subsequently marketed as a Crossover SUV that gave way for the retirement of the original MPV. To date, the MPV was replaced with a front wheel drive LW platform based on the 626 model. It is now more traditional by using a sliding rear doors and a front wheel drive.
The new Mazda MPV is more powerful as it uses the AJ 3.0-liter V6 engine and is already equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Much more is to be expected of the future Mazda MPVs!
