Mazda Catalytic Converter
Mazda Motors Corporation, a name derived from Ahura Mazda, the highest Zoroastrian
God of reason who granted wisdom and united man, nature and the other gods began
as a small cork manufacturing company in 1920s. The first production of vehicles
later came in the sixties in by the name Mazda R360 Coupe two-door passenger vehicle.
It was followed by other models such as the Mazda Carol and Mazda Cosmo Sports
110S to name a few.
By this time, as pollution became very dominant in majors cities not in America
alone but also to the rest of the world, environmental concerns started to become
the main priory. The emission standards were set to control the release of harmful
gases coming from the vehicles. When the Clean Air Act of 1970 was passed in the
United States, vehicles were prohibited to travel unless they pass the law. The
first remedy was to alter emission by modifying the engine. Then the most significant
device that changed the course of automotive history was invented: the catalytic
converter.
Catalytic converter is usually seen underneath the car and is commonly located
between the engine of the vehicle and its muffler. It is consists of clay sheets
separating the different chambers of a catalytic converter. These clay sheets
are consist of numerous fine holes that are lined with a thin metal oxide and
small particles of platinum and rhodium. Gasses emitted from engine combustion
like nitrogen gas, carbon dioxide, water vapor, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons,
and nitrogen oxide then pass through the catalytic converter and go to process
called oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide, reduction of nitrogen oxides
to nitrogen, and oxidation of hydrocarbons or unburnt fuel to carbon dioxide and
water thus effectively reducing the harmful gases when it reaches the air.
