The Jeep brand name - trademarked worldwide since 1950 has become one of the best known of all consumer brands in the world and an international byword for off-road capability. The name Jeep has always been a hero, not just in military terms but also in less glamorous conditions.
The Jeep Wagoneer was just one of the many Jeep vehicles that were produced with the comfort and the innovative technology that is usually associated with SUVs. It has often been called the first true Sport Utility Vehicle.
The Jeep Wagoneer was created while Jeep was owned by Kaiser Industries (also known as Kaiser Jeep); the Wagoneer remained in production through subsequent ownership by American Motors Corporation of AMC and DaimlerChrysler which was known as Chrysler Corporation before.
This vehicle was designed by Brooks Stevens, an industrial engineer. It was unveiled in 1962 and was considered the first vehicle designed from the ground up for a civilian purpose. It was fresh in every aspect. Even if it’s marketed as a substitute for the Willys station wagon, its overall package is different from that of Willys-Overland wagon.
First, the Jeep Wagoneer was a bit lower and longer compared to Willys station wagon. Another difference was the Wagoneer’s trapezoidal wheel openings, which is a signature feature of Jeep design at present. It was less boxy than the wagon, the windshield and rear of the Jeep Wagoneer were not as stiff either.
The name Wagoneer is sometimes perplexed with Studebaker Wagonaire, a retractable-roof station wagon which was also designed by Stevens.
