Have you got any idea how powerful your Jeep’s engine is and what all that power can do? The power production of a vehicle’s engine is usually measured in horsepower. Now, think of that power as something that really comes from horses. 100 horsepower would then be describing the power generated by 100 horses working together. Without any question, such force is definitely very powerful. 100 horsepower, however, is kind of small if compared to the actual power being given off by most Jeep vehicles today.

Because of the tremendous power given off by Jeep engines, it is not uncommon for some engine components to get damaged because of the engine power itself. One particular engine component that may wear off fast because of the power provided by the engine is the crankshaft. The large amount of power transmitted by the engine to the front end of the crankshaft causes it to move even before the rear end does. This results to a twisting motion, which later would cause a lot of torsional vibration on the shaft.

Engineers behind every Jeep vehicle, however, are too brilliant to miss this detail of power transmission. So to prevent too much torsional stress on the engine crankshaft, they made use of the Jeep harmonic balancer. A harmonic balancer is a product that attaches to the front end of the engine crankshaft. Its main function is to reduce the harmonic vibration normally created in the engine crankshaft. In the process, it helps prevent crankshaft failure and also reduces wearing on the main bearings and main journals.

Harmonic balancers are usually made up of three parts: a steel inner part, a steel outer part, and a rubber disk or spring loaded friction discs, or both, in between them. As engine power is transmitted to the front end of the crankshaft, it tries to move the heavy part of the damper. But instead of again twisting the crankshaft, the force ends up twisting the rubber or discs in between the steel exteriors. This action in itself reduces the torsional vibration and maintains the calm operation of the crankshaft.
