Honda is one of the largest, leading automobile manufacturers in Japan.
It began making cars in 1960 but prior to that, Honda has been making
contributions to the Japanese auto industry by manufacturing piston
rings. Its founder, Soichiro Honda, was an efficient and well known
piston manufacturer and was sub-contracted by Toyota. He then ventured
into making air screws and other engine parts and the whole engine as
well.
After the World War II, Japan was in great financial and
fuel need but it cannot do without any basic transportation. Honda took
this opportunity to make affordable means of transportation using his
manufacturing facilities. He attached an engine to a bicycle, which
became what we know now as scooters and motorcycles. Through motorcycle
racing or motorsport, Honda was able to introduce itself to world-wide
market of motorcycles and soon they bested foreign brands. Since the
1970s, Honda is the world’s largest maker of motorcycles.
While Honda was able to conquer the international market easily with
their wide range of motorcycles and mopeds, it was not easy to market
their cars globally, especially in the United States where their small
cars failed to attract American buyers. But Honda was persistent in its
aim to make it to the international scene and so they heightened their
standards and continued to innovate. It was in 1972 when Honda finally
got the American’s attention through the Honda Civic model. It was
bigger than previous Honda models. From then on, Honda began to compete
well against domestic, European and other import cars.
To meet various demands in the auto industry, Honda made not only
passenger cars but also other types of vehicles. Honda Passport was a
midsize utility vehicle launched by Honda in 1993. This was
manufactured in cooperation with Isuzu, another Japanese company known
for making commercial vehicles and diesel engines. Isuzu also made its
own version of the Honda Passport, the Rodeo. Both the Honda Passport
and the Rodeo were offered in 5-door SUV and shared common features and
components. However, the Honda Passport was discontinued after the 2002
model.
