Oxygen is an element needed in the process of
combustion. Ordinarily, such process creates smoke that is then
released to the atmosphere without further straining. In vehicles
though, because of another chemical present in the burning process
which is fuel, exhaust gases are much more harmful than waste products
of bio materials. Thus auto instruments which can help reduce the
negative effect of combustion are necessary.
In your Honda, one instrument valuable in the emissions control system is
the Honda oxygen sensor. It is also known as O2 sensor, lambda probe,
lambda sensor, lambda sond or EGO sensor. This device is deemed to
monitor the amount of oxygen present in the mixture that’s going to get
burned. The purpose is to determine whether the mixture is rich or
lean, so to reach the perfect ratio or at least get near it. If the
presence of oxygen is lesser than the perfect ratio, the mixture is
considered rich, whereas lean for that with higher amount.
What is the importance of determining the type of mixture? In such way,
the instrument sends correct data to the Honda’s computer and reacts
accordingly by balancing the amount of fuel to enter the engine as to
the need of that particular mixture. The sensing ability of a Honda
oxygen sensor can be affected by altitude, air and engine temperature,
barometric pressure, engine load and some other aspects. Inaccurate
data would affect the efficiency of the device to adjust correctly. The
result would be imbalanced ratio, and ultimately more pollutants in the
exhaust gas. This problem is noticed if the engine brings poor
performance mileage, when black smoke comes out of the exhaust system,
and when there’s presence of rotten egg smell.
In the United States, Honda becomes more notable due to the attribute
of being environment friendly. The Honda Civic and Accord are
considered to be among the cleanest vehicles in America today.
Apparently, one aspect behind that achievement is the performance
quality of Honda oxygen sensor. It proved to be effective in monitoring
all the components of the system, and carrying out the proper solution
in case of inconsistency.
