Oxygen sensors are used in different applications
like in diving and medical but the most common is that of the
automotive application. Generally, oxygen sensors are electronic
devices that measure the proportion of oxygen in the gas or liquid
being analyzed. Oxygen sensors use zirconium ceramic bulb that is
coated on both sides with a thin layer of platinum and comes in both
heated and unheated forms as it sensing element.
When talking in automotive language, oxygen sensors are also being
referred to as O2 sensor, lambda probe, lambda sensor, lambda sond or
EGO for exhaust gas oxygen sensor. Whichever of these terms is used, it
only refers the small sensor inserted into the exhaust system of a
petrol engine to measure the volume of oxygen remaining in the exhaust
gas to allow an electronic system called electronic control unit or ECU
to control the efficiency of the combustion process in the engine.
Moreover, oxygen sensors like the GMC oxygen sensor are being attached
to the modern vehicle’s engine exhaust manifold to find out whether the
mixture of air and gasoline going into the engine is rich or lean.
After which, the information is sent to the engine management computer
to do some necessary adjustments as to the mixture to give the engine
the best possible fuel economy and lowest possible exhaust emissions.
Without your oxygen sensor working properly, the normal ageing or the
use of leaded fuels can result to damage of the automobile’s catalytic
converter and costly repairs.
To avoid such problems, it is recommended that you constantly check
your oxygen sensor and should you replace it with a new one, the best
place to find quality oxygen sensors like the GMC oxygen sensor is
through the Internet.
