Containing the lifeblood of your GMC vehicle is the fuel tank. This car part may not be directly affecting the performance of your car but certainly, it is just as important as other parts in your vehicle. Without it, nothing will serve as a receptacle to the fuel needed for your vehicle to run. And with its important function of holding the fuel, it is necessary that you regularly check your GMC’s fuel tank if there are leaks to ensure your vehicle’s safety and good performance.
The fuel tank is placed at the rear end of the car, near the trunk compartment. For cars with the engine situated at the back part, the fuel tank is placed in front of the vehicle, under the hood. It is either made of metal or plastic. If you are going to replace your GMC fuel tank, you can choose between these two materials; however, make sure the one you are going to buy is durable enough to resist extreme temperatures underneath the trunk.
Your GMC fuel tank basically has similar structure with other fuel tanks. It has inlet and outlet pipes below and at the top of the tank, respectively. The sediments from the fuel are collected to the bottom of the tank so that they won’t go to the carburetor. Inside the tank, you would see baffles that prevent the oil from sloshing back and forth the container. Fuel tanks also have vents to avoid hydrocarbon emissions. The law likewise requires that cars must be equipped with rollover protection devices to avoid fuel spills.
How does the fuel system of your GMC works? Fuel is drawn to the fuel tank by the fuel pump and from there it goes to the engine where it is mixed with air. The air and fuel mixture then undergoes combustion within the engine and is ignited producing a force that propels the wheels of the vehicle. The combustion process continues as you drive the vehicle and so the fuel tank needs to be filled with fuel every now and then.
