Ever wondered why replacements for GMC cowls are
rare and hard to find? Well, the answer is simple. Plainly because we
don’t often replace them! And who do you think would manufacture a lot
of aftermarket GMC cowls if there is no big market for them?
The cowl is the sheet metal body panel located underneath the
windshield of the vehicle. From the front portion of your GMC, you’ll
easily notice it as the thin panel strip located in between the hood
and the lower end of the windshield. But the entire cowl panel is more
than just the visible area, as it actually extends under the hood.
Specifically, the cowl is located between the engine firewall and the
front of the dash panel. It houses several components of the vehicle,
including the instrument panel, the pedals and some portion of the
heater-ventilation-air conditioning (HVAC) unit of the vehicle. It also
serves as support to the rear end of the hood, the windshield and the
windshield wipers.
In their location, it is easy to realize why the cowls are rarely
replaced. Unlike the other body panel parts, they are less prone to
damages. However, there are instances when you’ll find the need to
replace them, although these instances are still rare. First, you have
to replace the cowl of your GMC when it gets rusty or leaky. This is a
common problem for old and vintage vehicles, although rare for newer
ones. The other instance is when the cowl gets severely damaged due to
a major collision or accident. But if the damage brought by an accident
reaches the cowl, it is probably better to replace the whole vehicle
instead.
So if your mechanic tells you that you need to replace the cowl of your
GMC truck, van, or SUV, better ask him again which part should be
replaced. Rarely will you find the need to replace the cowl of your
GMC, especially if it is fairly new. Probably, he is just referring to
the hood, as most people mistake the term “cowl” for the hood. But
should the cowl of your GMC really needs to be replaced, we advice that
you search for the part through the internet as it will greatly ease
your search.
