The Geo unit that you own might be equipped by an ignition system called distributor. It’s an ignition system of an internal combustion engine, which was used in earlier vehicle eras. Yet some brands still use them even up to the modern time, though seldom. This works by directing the voltage in correct order to the spark plugs. It has got three terminals responsible of transferring current to the wires leading to the spark plugs. They are the upper, middle and lower section terminals.

On its tower is the distributor cap with which the high tension current is distributed. Its end known as cap terminals is a substantial part of the system where the high tension spark plugs jump. Inside the distributor cap, just on the upper end of the distributor shaft is the distributor rotor. This one’s the part that where the high voltage coming from the ignition coil is being brought to before it pass through the metal projection in the cap and then finally to the spark plug, and is basically being driven by the cam shaft through the use of centrifugal advance mechanism.

In the mid section, the corners of the spinning breaker cam strike the breaker arm and separate the points at about 160 miles an hour, subsequently allowing current to flow. The high voltage ignited by the ignition coil travels to the rotor whirling inside a circle of high-tension terminals in the distributor cap. By then the starter has been ignited. The system will then wait until the starter responds accordingly in order to set the engine in operation.

For your Geo to not give you a hard time with start up, all distributor parts must be in good condition. Make sure that the cap terminals are not worn in order to prevent spark resistance. When the Geo distributor rotor is already problematic, find a reliable replacement as soon as possible. For rotors are non-reusable once damaged. And if you don’t have much knowledge about it, bring your Geo to professional mechanics.
