In 1967 at the break of Ford’s Expansion to Europe, two decades before
European Economic Community arrives, another great innovation from the
popular name was then to be released, the Ford Torino. It was marketed
to replace Ford Fairlane, a mid-size car built with American standards.
During its early years of production, Torino was the base for Ford’s
NASCAR entrants, and transformed into performance cars later.
Ford Torino was introduced in several trims. There’s the two-door
fastback, the one that we also call as notchback hardtop. Also
available is the four-door sedan, four-door station wagon, and two-door
convertible. This time, Torino was run by the 4.9-liter small block V8
and 6.4-liter big block engine. And during this generation, Ford has
also included Torino GT, the upscale model for the lineup.
It featured extra sport trim that was adorned with fashionable design
highlighted by vent windows. By the following year, Ford added Torino
Cobra, a unit equipped with Ford 408 7.01-liter Cobra Jet engine and
floor mounted 4-speed manual transmission. This car was pampered with
long list of items, making it very popular among the Fords. To prove
Ford’s worth for that popularity, a competitive aerodynamic body style
Torino Talladega came out.
Ford Torino’s developments didn’t stop with just those creations.
It continued with designing edge-cutting vehicles boosted by well
crafted curves and corners, which were matched by sleek lines and
incredible accents. The powertrains were improved to reach the
performance level of Thunder Jet, Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet.
There were lots of changes that Ford Torino has undergone. Some
were additional features for further modifications. Yet others were
cutting-offs, done for the necessary. Ford Gran Torino came, but the
others were being eliminated. Ford decided to concentrate on practical
units, slowed down, dropped the convertible, and then finally cut the
production. However, though the name and its engineering didn’t exist
anymore, its chassis lived for two years more within the body of
smaller LTD II and downsized Thunderbird.
