Highways and roads will always be filled with flaws like bumps and humps but good thing the car is equipped with shock absorbers to absorb the impact that can cause uncomfortable movements on the occupants of the vehicle. Through the help of the springs, the continuous bounce of the car due to he impact is controlled which lead to the stable motion of the car. Technically, the main purpose of shock absorbers is to dampen the compression of the suspension system through speed control of the suspension cycle. The speed of the suspension cycle is slowed down for compressing or rebounding. As shock absorbers dampen the spring, the kinetic energy is transformed into heat which paves way to the efficiency in handling the car.
The effectiveness of its purpose is also dependent upon its location. For cars equipped with suspension that moves up and down like Ford, shock absorbers must be mounted on the outboard as close as possible on the ball joints. The versatility of Ford shock absorbers allows easier adjustment to cope with various road conditions. The location of shock absorbers may depend upon the specifications and features of the car. The factors to be considered to achieve the proper shock absorber positioning are rebound resistance from within the shock, compression pressure inside the shocks, distance rearward from the axle, arc of travel from the car's locating arms and the compression or rebound travel.
Shock absorber replacements must be of right size and length especially for Ford auto makes. To know the right size, measurement of the distance from the suspension bump stop until to the surface it comes in contact and the distance from the upper shock mounting point down to the lower mounting point can be done. In mounting the new shock, the angle of the suspension must be known first.
