From the first simple gasoline-powered cars made in the late 1800s,
cars have evolved now into more than just an ordinary means of
transportation. Throughout the years in the history of automobiles,
there have been various kinds of vehicles manufactured for each type of
auto users. Each is designed and engineered to satisfy their different
driving needs and wants. In 1957, Ford introduced a unique vehicle that
combined the attributes of a car and a truck, the Ford Ranchero. This
vehicle looked like a pickup truck but was based on a car platform.
The Ford Ranchero was specially made for the North American market.
Although in Europe, this type of vehicle was very common and popular,
Ford Ranchero and the American versions of car-based pickups were
unique because they were extra big and powerful than most car/pickups.
The Ford Ranchero initially had no competitor. It was the first of its
kind made after the war and its success inspired other auto
manufacturers to create their own car-pickup vehicle.
Models made between 1957 and 1959 were based on the Ford Fairlane
platform. There were two models offered: the utilitarian standard model
and the Ford Ranchero Custom. The first model was widely used by
American farmers and traditional pickup truck buyers because of its
usefulness and lesser price. The Ford Ranchero Custom models were
equipped with additional accessories and had many features available of
the ford Fairlane vehicles, including stainless steel bodyside
mouldings. The two models, however, can be used with either of the Ford
Fairlane engines. The biggest of which is the 5.8L Thunderbird Special
engine.
In 1960, the Ford Ranchero got a new platform, the compact Ford Falcon,
which made it smaller, lighter and less expensive than the original
models. This platform was used through the 1966 model year. Again, the
Ranchero proved to be a successful Ford model during this period. In
the succeeding years, Ford Ranchero again went through major changes,
including a change to a more powerful engine lineup and change in
platforms. Its ceased production in 1979 since cars were getting
smaller and smaller, making car-based pickups like the Ranchero less
attractive.
