Ford Probe was manufactured from 1989 through 1997. It was a sporting
coupe sold in Europe and in North America. There were many models
linked with the Ford Probe including earlier Ford models. Although
launched as a replacement to the Ford EXP, Ford Probe was intended to
fill in the space left by Ford Capri in the European market. But it was
with the Mazda MX-6 that Ford Probe shared most of its features. Both
models are based on the Mazda GD platform and the GE platform. The
first platform was used on 1988-1992 Ford Probe models while the second
platform was used on the 1993-1997 Ford Probe models.
It was also planned by Ford to replace the long-time successful Ford
Mustang by the Ford Probe but Probe was not as successful as expected
by the company. It wasn’t able to match the high sales of the Mustang
especially in the North America. Ford Mustang aficionados also opposed
the rumors that the Ford Probe was going to be named as the Mustang
III. But this was unlikely to happen since if Ford Probe cars actually
made it as new Mustang models, they would have been the fourth
generation Ford Mustangs, not the third.
Maybe one of the reasons why Ford was not able to earn much from the
Probe models was their high price. Although the Ford Probe had great
potentials of competing well against cars of its class, it was worth
the price of other more prestigious sports coupe makes, which
unfortunately, others would prefer. In terms of styling, other
prestigious sports coupes had a better chance of getting the attention
of most car enthusiasts. Not that the Ford Probe was poorly styled, it
just lacked some sporty and aggressive look sports cars offer to
prospective buyers.
Sales of the Ford Probe, however, went down only on its latter years.
It was once among the best cars on its first years in the industry. It
was designated by Motor Trend Magazine as the Car of the Year for 1993
and among Car and Driver magazine’s Ten Best List for 1989, 1993 and
1994.
