When Pontiac introduced the first muscle car in the early 60s, the trend in the industry was soon geared towards manufacturing of high performance vehicles. Other auto brands followed Pontiac and created their own muscle cars and performance vehicles. Ford introduced in 1964, Ford Mustang, its smaller version of the muscle car, which used a compact passenger car chassis. It was called a pony car, a baby muscle car. Although the Ford Mustang first appeared in 1964, it was regarded as the 1965 Ford model.

Just like other trend-setting automobiles throughout the history of cars, Ford Mustang models were soon followed by other vehicle make. Other pony cars emerged such as the Chevrolet Camaro, Mercury Cougar, AMC Javelin, Dodge Challenger and even the Firebird, which is from Pontiac, the one that started the muscle car trend. Among these pony cars, Ford Mustang proved to be the most enduring vehicle. It is the only pony car that is still in production, besting the Camaro and the Firebird, which only lasted until 2002.

Ford Mustang and other pony cars became excellent alternative to the famous muscle cars, especially for those who cannot afford their high price. Ford Mustang cars were relatively lower in price, smaller and lighter than the earlier muscle cars, making them more fun to drive. Ford Mustangs were like sports car versions of regular Ford passenger cars. They exhibit more driving abilities and with a few aftermarket upgrades, these cars are potentially excellent racing cars.

Through the years, the Ford Mustang grew in size, in weight, in style and in performance. The 1970s Ford Mustang were no longer based on the compact Falcon but on the mid-size Ford Fairlane/ Mercury Comet platform. In 1982, Ford Mustang was reintroduced as the high performance Mustang GT. This paved the way to a new era of muscle car. It came with a 5L V8 engine, four speed transmission, taut suspension and aggressive tires that speak of its over-all tough and sporty character. Ford Mustang still went though many changes through the years and today the legend lives on, still promising of more successful years in the auto world.
