Many definitions have been provided for the LTD in the Ford LTD. Some say it is just a word contraction for limited, some say it means Lincoln Type Design, others claim it to be Lincoln-Thunderbird Division and maybe it could mean Luxury Trim Décor, but whatever it means, LTD will always stand out as a model that offers great engine power, fantastic performance and standard luxurious accessories and options.
The first time Ford used the LTD was on the Ford Galaxie in 1965. It served as the high-end trim for that marque and had the luxury and power to match other cars. Only two years after its release, the Ford LTD was a separate car model, dropping the Ford Galaxie marque to the lower end trims. Soon after the Ford LTD II came out as a high-end trim again for the Ford Torino. The LTD name was synonymous now to luxury and power. The first and second LTD both offered coupe, sedan, and wagon body styles. Many trims and styles also came out like the Landau and the Braugham.
In the start of the eighties, the Ford LTD came out with its top of the line trim the Ford LTD Crown Victoria. The LTD nameplate was then relegated to a mid-size car, which was based on the Ford Fox platform. The new LTD was being offered in sedan and wagon body styles until 1987, which, for a brief period of time was being produced at the same time as the Ford Taurus, which essentially replaced it. The Ford LTD was a very successful car for Ford; it became the third best selling car for Ford in the early eighties in America. The final LTD Crown Victoria coupes were produced for 1987, and sedans and wagons only continued through 1991. That was the last of the LTD, after a major redesign, the Ford LTD came out in 1992 known only as the Ford Crown Victoria.
