Ford Galaxie
Ford's contribution to the muscle car era in America was the Ford
Galaxie. It debuted in 1959 and had a successful run for fifteen years.
It was always offered as a full size platform embodying the criteria of
the American motorists of those times, big and powerful. The Ford
Galaxie exhibited an incredible quantity of stainless steel and chrome
body trim and beautiful three-tone cloth pattern interior trim which
made it very elegant and yet muscular.
Even on its first year, the Ford Galaxie came out in various models and
trims; they were the Galaxie Club Victoria, Galaxie Town Victoria,
Galaxie Town Sedan, Galaxie Club Sedan, Galaxie Sunliner Convertible,
and Galaxie Skyliner Retractable. The Ford Galaxie Skyliner retractable
was probably the most impressive and memorable in the lineup. It had an
all steel roof that can be retracted to produce a convertible.
The Ford Galaxie had trims that ranged from the base to the luxurious,
but as always options are available to make them more interesting and
comfortable as well as fashionable. These options were air
conditioning, sunray multi-colored wheel covers, flying elipse hood
ornament, power windows, power front seat, power steering, deluxe rear
deck antenna, power brakes and lots more.
The Ford Galaxie and all its models had an assortment of engines to
power them, the engine sizes were the 292 V-8 with 200 horsepower, 223
Mileage Maker Six Cylinder at 145 Horsepower, 332 Thunderbird Special,
and the 352 Thunderbird Special with an impressive 300 horsepower
output. Transmission options were a Fordomatic Drive two-speed
automatic, overdrive, three speed conventional drive with an overdrive
option, and the three speed Cruise-O-Matic Drive automatic, all of them
providing the extra oomph to make the Ford Galaxie one of the most
renowned muscle cars of that era.
From the onset, the Ford Galaxie was accepted by the motoring public
with open arms, with every make and model guaranteeing a good time and
a great performance. Up to this day, a well-maintained Ford Galaxie is
a gem in every collector's compilation of classic cars.
