What can a change of name do to a vehicle? Nothing much perhaps, if you would ask other vehicle manufacturing company, but Ford must have had a good reason in mind. We're referring to the "allnew" Ford Freestar. One look at it and you cannot mistake it for an old minivan that Ford had long been selling, the Ford Windstar. With the new name though, Ford hopes that the fate of their poor selling minivan would change as well.
Ford introduced the Ford Freestar in 2004. In form and performance, it was unmistakably the same minivan that it replaced, the Ford Windstar. Ford explained that the change in name was in line with the company's plan to change the name of all their vehicles in the current line-up and make them all start with the letter F. Ford sees this as a good marketing strategy, making their vehicles easily identifiable because of their names.
But while the Ford Freestar is essentially a Ford Windstar with a new name, it offered some welcome changes for the 2004 model year. The exterior remained largely unchanged, with that same animal snout-like fascia that most Americans hated. The interior, however, received some major upgrades and redesigns. One noticeable new interior feature is the 3rd row folding seats and the stack of new safety features and designs loaded in the minivan.
The performance of the Ford Freestar, and even the earlier Windstar, was actually comparable to most of its higher ranked competitors. Probably the only drawback with the Ford Freestar is its style, which unluckily remained unchanged even with the change of name. However, the Ford Freestar has that low floor panel that allows easier entrance and exit of passengers, and a modest amount of interior space for maximum traveling comfort.
