Ford Falcon
We know for a fact that large automobiles are becoming increasingly
costly. Historically, the big three auto manufacturers, GM, Ford and
Chrysler focused merely on the larger and more profitable cars in the
US and Canadian market. But towards the end of the 1950s, all three
manufacturers realized that this strategy would no longer work, many
American families opted to have a smaller car which is cheaper. Ford
Falcon together with the Valiant from Chrysler, and the rear-engined
Chevrolet Corvair are included in this category.
The Ford Falcon was a small car, though elsewhere it was considered a
medium-size car has been manufactured by Ford since 1960. It also
reached the United States of America, Canada, Argentina, Mexico, and
Chile, and in many other countries as well. New Falcons are now built
in Australia, perhaps for the reason that it remains Ford's most
admired model there. In its introduction, it sold over a half million
and sold over a million by the end of the second year. Falcon is
definitely one of the biggest selling names in the world of the
automotive industry. They dominated the ranks in Australia and New
Zealand and are commonly used as police cars. But though it was
popular, it was outsold in Australia by GM Holden's Kingswood until
1978.
This small car was powered by a smaller, lightweight 90 hp, 144 cubic
inch (2.4L) straight-6 with a single barrel carburetor. Its
construction was unibody, the suspension was fairly standard, plus the
coil springs in front and leaf springs in the rear. Though considered a
small vehicle, it can accommodate a total of six passengers in sensible
comfort in the simple interior. Throughout its history, the Falcon has
been available in sedan, station wagon, and panel van versions.
Its final sales year in the United States was 1969. Ford had considered
replacing the Falcon with a model from "Project Capricorn" that would
have seen a front-wheel drive car. In 2004, a Falcon-based all wheel
drive off-road model was released.
