Ford Custom
A vehicle model that began at the top and ended at the bottom—that's
the Ford Custom. The Ford Custom was introduced by Ford as a high-end
vehicle model, occupying the topmost position in Ford's line-up of
cars. Mid-way its history, its position was dropped as a mid-range
vehicle. By the time it was deposed from Ford's vehicle line-up, the
model was only sold as a "no-frills" vehicle, sold mostly as police
cars and taxi cabs.
The Ford Custom nameplate was first used by Ford in the 1930s
to name their premium range of automobiles. Being luxury vehicles, the
early Ford Customs were generously equipped with a lot of features.
Most models, especially those named as the Ford Custom Deluxe, were
equipped with a normally aspirated V8 engine that produces 100 hp of
power.
In the 1950s, different Ford vehicle models replaced the Ford
Custom in the deluxe range. The first to replace it is the Ford
Crestliner, then the Ford Crestline, and finally the Ford Fairlane. The
Ford Custom then became the mid-range offering in the Ford vehicle
line-up.
By 1959, a new car called the Ford Galaxie was again
introduced by Ford to occupy its mid-level offering. This caused the
Ford Custom nameplate to slip to a lower level. After the Ford
Galaxie's introduction, the Ford Custom has become the entry-level full
size vehicle model in Ford's vehicular line-up. And aside from the
slightly more equipped Ford Custom 500, all Ford Custom vehicles were
considered very basic full-size vehicles. Through its final years in
the market, the Ford Custom was offered mostly as police cars and taxi
fleets, although anyone who wants to have a very basic full-size car
can purchase a Ford Custom.
Early models of the Ford Custom, especially the Ford Custom
Deluxe, are considered prized collector cars today. Collectors,
however, does not find the same interest for the later models of the
said vehicle. Most of the Ford Custom vehicles you can find today are
old and worn-out cars. But with high quality restoration Ford Custom
parts, and with the aid of expert vintage car restorers, one can bring
back the Ford Custom to its former glory.
