Cars with an “out of this world” design, loaded with tons of controls
for its various features, and have the ability to navigate all sorts of
terrain, including waters and air—that’s how we envision futuristic
cars today. Maybe I am exaggerating too much, but essentially, those
are the kinds of cars we think of as futuristic. The Bat Mobile, James
Bond’s cars and a lot of other fictional vehicles that we see in the
television and the movies has definitely something to do with this
concept.
Turn back the times to the 1950s and you’ll see that people’s
idea about futuristic cars back then were simpler, and actually more
realistic. See-through vehicle tops, fast folding convertible tops,
extra powerful engines—these basically define futuristic cars back
then. Ford has shown many of these futuristic concept vehicles in their
annual auto shows, and has actually produced some of them. In 1952, to
be exact, Ford has introduced some futuristic cars in their Crestline
series, which was introduced with their other vehicle series like the
Mainline and the Customline.
There were actually three vehicles introduced by Ford in their
top-of-the-line Crestline series. The first, and actually the most
affordable, is the Ford Crestline Victoria hardtop coupe. The next
vehicle in the line is the delight of every top-down car lover—the Ford
Crestline Sunliner convertible that features a quick folding top, the
fastest during that period. The most futuristic of the cars, however,
is the Ford Crestline Skyliner hardtop coupe. The Skyliner is basically
the same as the Sunliner except for its blue-green tinted Plexiglas
roof section and some minor trim modifications. Because of the
transparent roof section, the Ford Crestline Skyliner was considered as
futuristic back then, and was actually considered as the car that
inspired many vehicles today equipped with a sunroof.
Well, the Ford Crestline series designs may not seem all too
futuristic for us today, but it is actually futuristic by definition,
because it featured the very first sunroof that would become popular
for most vehicles manufactured in a later time. Today, the Ford
Crestline may be considered a vehicle of the past, but with high
quality restoration Ford Crestline parts, you can actually revive the
glory of this old, top-of-the-line Ford luxury car.
