First unveiled in 1995, the Ford Contour had a five-year run which
ended in 2000. Based largely on the successful Ford Mondeo which had
huge sales in Europe, the Ford Contour wanted to duplicate its success
in the North American market but came up short. The Ford Contour had a
size that was between the subcompact Ford Escort and the midsize Ford
Taurus.
The low-end engine available for the Ford Contour was a 2.0 L inline 4,
which was standard equipment on the base, GL and more luxurious LX
models. The sportier SE model sported a 2.5 L V6 engine which is
available as an option to the other trims as well. There are also
additional features that are standard on all trim models such as
cross-car structural brace located between the windshield pillars,
boron-steel side beams, dual airbags, AM/FM stereo radio, variable
intermittent wipers, a console with cup holders and reclining front
bucket seats. Optional features for the Contour include anti-lock
brakes, traction control and a 4-speed manual automatic transmission.
As the years progressed, the Ford Contour was outfitted with more
accessories and performance parts to make it more competitive and add
better performance. Like in 1998, when Ford issued an SVT model for the
Ford Contour. The SVT used the 2.5-liter V6 engine but in
195-horsepower tune. Five-speed manual was the only transmission, and
the SVT also added antilock brakes, sport suspension, larger tires, and
other goodies. All Contours got a new center console with armrest. But
after the new millennium started the Ford Contour lost its steam with
the motoring public and was dropped from the Ford roster.
