For the past two decades the minivan has grown in usefulness and
versatility. It is now used for virtually everything, from mobile
homes, ambulances, delivery vans, and conversion vehicles to the main
family vehicle. They offer room and space to fit everyone and
everything. They can offer all the comforts in the road. Their
versatility combines the attributes of a station wagon and an SUV. The
minivan is probably one of the factors that led to the demise of the
station wagon.
The Ford Aerostar was Ford's first effort to produce a minivan. They
first unveiled it in the middle of 1985 as a 1986 model. It came out as
a rear wheel drive which proved to be very beneficial in towing
capacity. The Ford Aerostar was notable for utilizing a customized
pickup truck chassis essential to its unibody structure. This design
was developed due to the fact that the designers in the truck
department were unknown and uncomfortable with unibody construction,
and essentially designed a frame into the unibody. Since the Ford
Aerostar was using truck parts, replaceable truck options were
available and the power and drive could be modified. They offered the
same strength, durability and reliability the Ford trucks offered.
Initially, when the Ford Aerostar was offered they came in two
categories; passenger and cargo-hauling form. In 1990, the Ford
Aerostar received new changes and more power. A 4.0-liter V6 and
heavy-duty 4-speed automatic transmission was now available offering
more speed and power unlike its original 3.0 engine. By then a stretch
minivan was also being offered for more space and room. Four-wheel
drive was also being offered as an option. The Ford Aerostar could sit
5 persons in the standard form and seven passenger seating was
optional. Sadly by 1997 the Ford Aerostar lineup was discontinued.
