From 1989 to 1995 model years, Chrysler gave America a dependable
transportation with the introduction of the Dodge Spirit. It is a
traditional 4-door compact sedan that’s based on Chrysler’s K platform.
The Dodge Spirit was believed to be almost similar to Chrysler LeBaron
and Plymouth Acclaim except for some interior and exterior designs and
features. And though the Acclaim and LeBaron provides a more
comfortable and dependable ride, the Spirit gives a better handling and
offers a firmer ride.
The Dodge Spirit was made in two assembly plants located in Newark,
Delaware and Toluca, Mexico. Its production ended on January 18, 1995
to give way to Dodge Stratus. The base engine that powered the Dodge
Spirit was a 2.5-liter engine which is mainly a variation of the 2.2
liter four that was launched with the K-cars in 1982 model years. This
sedan may also be outfitted with the optional Mitsubishi 3.0-liter V6
engine. Except for its early years, the Dodge Sprit received few
changes each model year.
In 1991, Dodge introduced the Spirit R/T to be a competitor of Ford
Taurus SHO, which at that time was more or less alone in its class. The
R/T was basically patterned to the Spirit ES Turbo. No wonder why their
interiors are similar. However, Spirit R/T’s suspension has been
slightly modified, the alignment was changed, the spring rates were
increased, tighter shocks were added and several steering elements were
redesigned. This model was also significantly equipped with standard
four-wheel disc brakes. Under the hood, the Dodge Spirit received a
16-valve intercooled 2.2 liter, otherwise called as the Turbo III and
was considered as Chrysler’s first four valve configuration.
Although it didn’t become that popular, nothing has changed. The Dodge
Spirit is always a practical and capable sedan. And with bigger
drivetrains and turbocharged versions, the Spirit proves to be speedy
and spirited. It has a big and spacious cabin that makes it an ideal
family sedan.
