Dodge Shadow

Designed for affluent young buyers, the Dodge Shadow was a front-wheel drive subcompact that was originally offered in 4-door hatchback form. It was launched by Dodge in 1987 together with the Plymouth Sundance, a nearly identical model. Later, a two-door hatchback was soon offered. The Dodge Shadow comes sportier than the Sundance. Both models were assembled in Sterling Heights, Michigan and Toluca, Mexico.

The engine choices include the standard 2.2-liter 4-cylinder power source and the optional 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. Also available is the turbocharged version of the 2.5-liter. Dodge Shadow's standard transmission is a 5-speed manual while a 3-speed automatic is offered as an option.

In 1990, the Dodge Shadow was redesigned. It received a standard driver-side airbag as well as a new turbocharged engine   a 2.2-liter VNT Turbo IV version of the standard 4 cylinder. However, this turbocharged engine was offered only for the premium ES trim and for other special competition package. A year later, a surprising trim was introduced   the Dodge Shadow convertible, but it runs only until 1993 model year. The production of Dodge Shadow ceased on March 16, 1994 and it was replaced by the Neon.

The Shadow didn't become a hit because its performance wasn't that impressive. Also, Shadow's assembly quality and body built cannot surpass or even match its Japanese competitors. But considering the cost, Dodge Shadow performs well and is good enough for its price. This car was aimed for youngsters who wish for a decent subcompact car that comes in budget-friendly price.

Dodge Shadow is among the P-body cars introduced by Chrysler. This car design was introduced in 1980's when the European-designed vehicles especially the Dodge Omni and Horizon have lost its popularity and appeal. Because of this, Chrysler feels the need to introduce a new car design. And P-body cars became the solution to their problem.
