Dodge Monaco
If a company revives the name of an old car and used it for a new one,
does that mean that the new vehicle would look like the old one?
Certainly not! At least not for the Dodge Monaco. The Dodge Monaco
nameplate was first used on a vehicle manufactured by Chrysler in the
1970s. The name was revived later for another vehicle manufactured
shortly in the 1990s. But aside from the name, no other thing is common
between the two.
The original Dodge Monaco was introduced by the Chrysler
Corporation in 1965. It was a full-size personal luxury vehicle aimed
to compete with the Pontiac Grand Prix in the personal luxury
automobile market. In its first few years in the market, the Dodge
Monaco was available only as a 2-door hardtop coupe. Later, however,
sedans and station wagons were also offered in the Dodge Monaco
line-up, taking over what was left behind by the demised Custom 880
except for its convertible model. After the demise of the Custom 880,
the Dodge Monaco became the premium trim level of all Dodge full-size
cars.
In 1975, a line of vehicles based on the C body platform of
the original Dodge Monaco was introduced and were called the Dodge
Royal Monaco. A year later, the Dodge Royal Monaco became Dodge's
full-size luxury trim offering while the original Dodge Monaco was
reduced in size to become the mid-size replacement to the Dodge
Coronet. After 1978, the entire Dodge Monaco line was dropped from
Chrysler's line-up of vehicles.
The Dodge Monaco nameplate would later re-appear in 1990 but
as a totally different vehicle. The Dodge Monaco of the '90s was
actually just a badge-engineered version of the Eagle Premier but with
some distinctive styling cues. It was offered in LE and ES trim levels
and were equipped with a sole 3.0-liter V6 engine. The model was sold
only until 1992, after which it was replaced by the Dodge Intrepid.
Two distinct vehicles having the same name—that's the two
Dodge Monaco models. Definitely, two sets of Dodge Monaco parts exists
